Well, not so much "BOOM" but more the grating sound of drive head on disk. I've been trying to re-use old hard disks to boot into UBUNTU. I thought that these drives were OK and simply spare because I'd upgraged with bigger, better drives. It seems that most of them were on their way out. The drives start off noisy then become unreliable and finally there's the tick, tick, tick of doom.
